2026 RIMS workshop in Kyoto

I attended the RIMS Symposium Inverse problems for partial differential equations and related areas in Kyoto, in January 2026. It was a lovely chance to cherish my connections with Japanese colleagues and to bring my research group from Helsinki to explore and share mathematical ideas.

I gave a talk on my new results on automatic choice of regularization parameter, developed together with Markus Juvonen, Chuyang Wu, Yiqiu Dong, and others. You can download my slides here. The latest idea is to use two different computational models for the same inverse problem and compute a regularized solution iteratively for both of them. The regularization parameter is adjusted on the fly so that the two reconstructions become similar enough. Here is a conceptual diagram:
